Ms. Amber Ajani's Profile
Amber Ajani is an environmentalist who recently graduated from American University with a Master’s in Environmental Sciences. She is currently working for an environmental magazine Subh-e-Nau, and is a consultant at Shehri, working to develop a climate change guide for Pakistan.
She has worked on consultancy projects with Iracambi in Brazil and Greenpeace USA and has interned at various international environmental organizations in Pakistan and the U.S. Her research publication deals with carbon sequestration while her work experiences involve projects dealing with environmental health, alternative fuel, coastal management and climate change.
She also served as the President of Beekeeping society at her university in the U.S. and is interested in working on issues of climate change and food security in Pakistan.
Abstract
The Climate Change Conference in Paris
Last December, world leaders gathered in Paris for the largest climate change conference with the aim to set the world on track towards a low-carbon future and to combat climate change. The 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21) resulted in 195 countries adopting the first-ever universal and legally binding global climate deal known as the Paris Agreement. I was fortunate to attend the conference as part of my university’s delegation and observe its proceedings. Drafting a successful climate agreement was a huge challenge and I saw first-hand how our world leaders did it.
What most people don’t know is that the COPs are not just about negotiations. Even though formal negotiations are considered its most important aspect, it is also the side events, civil society demonstrations and media hype that help create the momentum pushing our world leaders to reach a universally acceptable decision.
In this presentation, I hope to discuss the need for Paris agreement, the conference proceedings, Pakistan’s climate pledge, the key elements of the agreement and its present status. This will help show the lesser known (and more fun) side of the conference proceedings and create awareness about the global and national efforts to deal with the problem of climate change.
