Ms. Haya Fatima Iqbal's Profile
Haya Fatima Iqbal is an independent filmmaker who co-produced an HBO documentary film A Girl in the River, following the life of an honor killing attempt survivor in the heart of Punjab. The film won the 2016 Academy Award in the Short Documentary category.
Her work has been featured on CNN, Huffington Post, Deutsche Welle, TV Russia, the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Dawn, Daily Times, The News, Geo News, and Aaj News. She also teaches media and journalism at Habib University.
She attended New York University as a graduate student, where she was a Fulbright Master’s grantee studying news and documentary.
Abstract
A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness

I would like to show A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness, an Academy Award-winning documentary film that I co-produced, at this year’s alumni conference. The film follows the life of a young woman in Gujranwala who survived an honor killing attempt in the hands of her father and documents her life and struggles after the attack.
The film casts light on how legislation and due legal process fail Pakistani women even if the basic logistical operations of the system such as public hospital services and police action is timely and efficient, as was the case with the of the protagonist in this particular film.
The film is relevant to the theme of the conference, because it served as an agent of change in the country by sparking debate revolving around laws related to honor killings. In the aftermath of the attention the film received, amendments are now being made to laws on honor killings in Pakistan.
As someone who was always out in the field during the filmmaking process of the film, I would also be willing to talk briefly about the pre-production and production process of the documentary as well.
