Mr. Muhammad Muazzam Sharif's Profile
Prior to attending the University of Southampton for my PhD, I received a Master's degree in English Literature and Applied Linguistics from the University of Peshawar (2004) and joined the same as a lecturer in 2005. From 2009-10, I attended the University of Georgia as part of the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant program. There, I had the opportunity to work under the supervision of renowned scholars, Dr. Alan Godlas and Prof. Kenneth L. Honerkamp. As a Fulbright alumnus, I organized various workshops including the Semester System for Faculty of the Colleges in Khyber Pukhtunkhwa in Pakistan, which was funded by a Fulbright grant for academic activities. In 2013, drawn by supervision opportunities and research resources available, I began a PhD at the department of English, University of Southampton (U.K.).
I am a member of the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Culture at Southampton and co-organizer of the seminar series for 2013-15. I was also part of the biennial Society for Renaissance Studies Conference in 2014 at the University of Southampton. At Kohat University of Science and Technology, I have been part of the teaching team for the English Access Microscholarship Program for over three years.
Abstract
Fight against Terrorism and Violence: Education as an Ally of Pakistan
Where Pakistan, with the support of US, is trying to curb terrorism and the growing violence, this presentation explores and questions the concept of revenge in Hamlet against the context of Pukhtun culture in the Khyber Pukhtunkhwa (KP) province of Pakistan. As revenge is part of the culture, this paper seeks to understand the emotive meaning of revenge and its role in the growing violence/ terrorism in Pakistan.
This study seeks to ascertain the experience of the play as a dramaturgical construct which questions the revenge ethos capable of modifying entrenched beliefs among young Pakistanis engaged in reading the play at KP universities. Could it be a means to address this nuisance of revenge/ badla to help minimize violence in the region? This talk will attempt answer this question and explore other options for conflict resolution among KP youth.
