Global Undergraduate Program (UGRAD)
In 2010, the Global Undergraduate Semester Exchange Program - Pakistan (Global UGRAD-Pakistan) was launched by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the United States Department of State. The program in Pakistan is administered by the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) and in the United States by the International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX).
Within a short span, the Global UGRAD has gained immense popularity among Pakistani university-going students. The first batch of 100 fellows of the 2010-11 Global UGRAD-Pakistan returned to Pakistan to complete their undergraduate degrees at Pakistani universities.
The United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) especially seeks applications from individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds and remote areas who would not otherwise have such an opportunity. Women, minorities and people with disabilities are also especially encouraged to apply.

Eligibility Criteria
- Pakistani citizens
- Applicants should be between 18-24 years old by the deadline
- Currently enrolled in a college or university in Pakistan and committed to returning to their home university following the completion of the program
- Applicants must be in their 14th year of formal education (2nd year of Bachelor's at the time of application deadline)
- Applicants are required to submit current/most recent, and old transcripts with application
Ineligibility
- Dual U.S./Pakistani nationals or U.S. permanent residents
- Employees of the Fulbright organization, the U.S. Department of State, or USAID and their spouses, siblings, children, dependents, and parents
- Students who have been to the United States on a J-visa or a U.S. government-funded grant

The program lasts for one academic semester, typically 4 to 5 months.

Participants are placed at various universities across the United States. The specific university will be determined by our partners in the U.S. (IREX).
- 1. Who is eligible to apply for the Global UGRAD program?
Pakistani citizens, currently enrolled in a university in Pakistan in an undergraduate (Bachelor's) program, who are between 18-25 years old and in their 3rd or 4th semester are eligible.
- 2. Can graduate students apply for the Global UGRAD program?
No, only undergraduate students are eligible to apply.
- 3. What academic disciplines are eligible?
Students from all academic disciplines are eligible to apply.
- 4. Can a medical students apply for this program?
Medical students can apply for this program as long as they are in their 2nd year of the program.
- 5. Are students with disabilities eligible to apply?
Yes, students with disabilities are encouraged to apply. The program is committed to providing accommodations for students with special needs.
- 1. How do I apply for the Global UGRAD program?
Applications are submitted online through the USEFP website. You will need to create an account, fill out the application form, and submit the required documents (transcripts & certificates).
- 2. What documents are required for the application? ?
Typically, the application requires academic transcripts (including the most recent one confirming your CGPA), a personal statement, and certificates for any extracurricular activities within the last 5 years.
An explanation of the university's grading scale is to be uploaded in case the CGPA or percentage is not mentioned on your transcript
Only selected students will be required to provide Reference Letters and No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their current academic institution.
- 3. Is an English proficiency test required for the application?
Only selected candidates will be required to take the TOEFL/Duolingo English Test (DET) administered by USEFP.
- 4. Is there any application fee?
No, there is no application fee for the Global UGRAD program.

- 7. How will I know that my application was received?
Applicants will be sent an automated email confirming the submission of the online application once the application is submitted successfully.
For the applicant's records, the confirmation email will contain the applicant's application ID number as well. Please do not call or email to check!
- 1. How are applicants selected for the program?
The selection process includes a review of applications, interviews, and a final evaluation based on academic merit, leadership potential, and cultural adaptability.
- 2. When will I be notified if I am selected?
The complete recruitment cycle typically takes 7-8 months. Applicants are notified of their selection through emails by their assigned program officers, who will also guide the selected candidates on the next steps.
- 1. What are my responsibilities as a participant?
Participants are expected to attend all classes, maintain a full course load, engage in community service, and participate in cultural exchange activities.
- 2. Will I receive academic credit for the courses I take?
Yes, participants will receive academic credit. However, you will need to check your home institution's credit transfer policy for this.
- 1. What happens after the program ends?
After the program, participants are required to return to Pakistan and complete their degree. They are also encouraged to apply what they've learned to benefit their communities.
- 2. Can I stay in the U.S. after the program?
No, participants are required to return to Pakistan as per the terms of the program and J-1 visa requirements.
